    Description

Old Mr Toad Vintage Pairpoint Glass Cup Plate 483
Thornton W Burgess Society Window Sill Art Glass
    Made in USA
This whimsical crystal Pairpoint Glass cup plate features Old Mr. Toad with his top coat, top hat, and walking stick. True to the original Harrison Cady illustrations, Old Mr. Toad has numerous warts, large eyes, and the familiar shape of the American hop-toad. Included in the detailed design are seven toadstools, a stand of reed grass, a tall flowering tree, and a dragonfly. Pairpoint plate 483 began pressing in 1987. Note: The photo showing the cupcake plate example is from a different plate and is not included in this listing :-) This coaster size cup plate would make thoughtful baby shower gift when a paired with a classic Thornton Burgess book. Thornton W. Burgess was the creator of Peter Rabbit and his animal friends in the Dear Old Briar Patch, the Smiling Pool, the Green Meadow and the Laughing Brook. The Thornton Burgess Society, which ran the former Burgess museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, sold cup plates bearing the imprint of the characters to help fund the museum. The last photo is of a different cup plate and is for size illustration only. Vintage Pairpoint Glass lead crystal cup plates are wonderful works of art glass. The 3.5 inch cup plates were hand crafted in the older traditional ways, with the artisan working with hammer and chisel to create the steel molds used for each design. The molten glass for each coaster size cup plate was carefully hand pressed into the engraved mold using an antique press. This hand process created a series of cup plates that are similar, but not identical. The art glass is not perfect, and you may see tiny bubbles, lovely little swirls of color, etc. The beautiful irregularities highlight the handmade nature of each piece. When you look at the photos with the zoom feature, remember that little imperfections you see may not be noticeable to the naked eye. If you look closely, you can see that each cup plate has the artisan's initials and the Pairpoint trademark included within the design.
