Scale model of the massive #6 Lever Shear produced by United Engineering & Foundry Company (later Mesta Machine) circa 1905. Three versions of this prototype shear were produced, engine driven, motor driven, and belt driven. As massive as this is, it is not the largest shear produced by UEFCO, (that'd be the #7 Lever Shear) but it is the second largest, and still a massive HEAVY METAL piece for your layout.
Capacity: 5x5 inch or 3x12 inch cold soft steel.
Weight w/75hp electric motor, 105,000lbs. Floor space required: 8ft 6in x 19ft 9 in.
Speed, 18 to 24 cuts per minute when the flywheel shaft runs 130 to 178 revolutions per minute. Gearing has 12-inch face with shrouding, ratio 7.2 to 1. This shear was mostly used for cutting large billets and heavy scrap. When arranged for cutting scrap the top edge of the lower knife is raised to the level of the top of the housing, so as to give greater freedom in cutting irregular plates, etc. This shear is recommended for all heavy work up to its capacity, and especially for scrap-yard purposes.
This equipment, like many vintage steel mill machines, requires a raised floor with cutouts for the gearing and flywheel to extend below base level. Transport on a heavy flat car requires you to devise a secure raised blocking arrangement, and this blocking is not included.
This machine is so huge that workers running it would have had to stand on a raised operator platform. In the "good old days" this platform would have been thrown together ad-hoc from random chunks of steel or wood planking scavenged from other places in the factory and haphazardly set in front of the machine. Today's OSHA would not approve!
Other items in photos shown for size comparison - Not included.
Scale model is for display and operating model railroad load / modelling and is not a child's toy. Static model only. No moving parts.
FRAGILE!
For use by railroad modelers age 14 years minimum.
